Qasil and Vitamin C: The Dynamic Duo Against Hyperpigmentation
Posted on Ayan Osman
When Huda Organics was founded five years ago by the company’s namesake, Huda Ahmed, it had one principal objective in mind: unlocking the magic of Somalia’s most treasured beauty secret, qasil!
The green powder, deriving from the gob tree that’s native to Somalia, is remarkable not only for its antioxidant rich nature, but for its ability to be used in a variety of ways. With the simple touch of nature’s most abundant resource, water, qasil powder transforms into a foamy lather that can be used as a cleanser, a gentle exfoliant, a hair and face mask, and even a shampoo!
Since 2017, we’ve been fortunate enough to grow from a small one-women side hustle, to a fully-fledged company, with offices in London and Somalia. Thanks to all of you, we’ve been able to start a global qasil movement. We know this to be true because we’ve received orders, DMs, emails and sometimes even voice notes from Singapore to Nigeria!
We know that some of you are skincare aficionados in search of the next holy grail product to add to your routine. However, we also know that many of you are teenagers struggling with acne; busy mothers looking for a multipurpose product that’s gentle enough to use on you and your babies; men looking for a gentle exfoliant to help with ingrown hairs caused by shaving. The list is truly endless…
Just as we’ve grown to know more and more of you as we’ve expanded, so too have our goals as a company changed. As wonderful as qasil is and as much as it will always remain the beating heart of Huda Organics, we’ve now set our sights on something even bigger and better than ever before!
Some of you probably already know that we’ve got some amazing things in the works for this year. We used our emerald ticket as an opportunity to tease some of you with a new mysterious gift, and there may be more to come *hint hint.* To say we are excited to share this with all of you in the coming months is an understatement; in fact, it’s nothing short of a dream come true.
You may be asking yourself why it has taken so long for us to even consider branching and expanding our range. The truth is it hasn’t actually taken us long to consider doing so - the entire process of creating these up-and-coming products has been a years-long labour of love. As a company that was founded on the premise that qasil could be used as a vehicle for wider social reform in Somalia, we’ve made the decision, despite countless offers, to remain a self-funded operation, rather than sell-off a portion of our company. While this has slowed down the process of production, as well as reduced our access to any fancy marketing agencies and glossy magazines, it has meant that we have remained unencumbered by a larger corporation’s economic interests.
It has given us the opportunity to use all that we have learned from you - our customers - and taken the time to move forward with care, attention and intention. We have no desire to become a company that pumps out product after product with profit as the only motivation. We don’t want hundreds of our products to clutter your bathroom sink, vanity table or skincare cabinet. We want you to actually use our products and for these products to become staples in your routines. After all, these products were made for you, and by you.
By you? YES, BY YOU. While you may not have been the chemist in the lab, these products were informed and created detail-by-detail by all of your comments, suggestions and concerns.
Over the next few weeks, we will be teasing you with snippets of the new product’s trajectory and creation and we welcome your input in the final stages of our launch! It would only be right to have all of you involved in something we created specifically for each and every one of you!
Here’s to a brilliant new year!
